BorgWarner Incorporated

BorgWarner is a corporation whose main function is to supply highly engineered systems and components that are primarily for vehicle powertrain applications.  They do provide other system applications, but the powertrain applications are the most evident.  Their applications are mainly sold to original equipment manufacturers around the world.  These OEMs mainly deal with passenger cars, sport-utility vehicles, trucks, and commercial transportation products.  BorgWarner has operations functioning all around the world.  It has manufacturing and technical facilities in forty-three different locations in fourteen different countries.  This widespread operation allows BorgWarner to effectively serve many different customers around the world.  These customers are located in North America, South America, Europe and Asia.  They also are an original equipment supplier to every major OEM around the world (bwauto.com).  This wide base of serving customers has given BorgWarner a solid foundation for long lasting success in the industry.

In 2003 the company decided to change the way that they reported their results.  They chose a two part system to report their results.  This included the two reportable operating segments.  These segments became known as Driveline and Engine (Value Line, 2004).  These two segments are the most effective way to split up the product offerings of BWA.  There are similar products in each segment that do not really relate to the other segment.  The Driveline segment is mainly comprised of the combination of the TorqTransfer Systems and the Transmission Systems Segment.  The Engine segment of the product offerings is made up primarily of the Morse TEC, Air/Fluid Systems, and Cooling Systems (Value Line, 2004).  By splitting up their reporting, BWA feels that they can more effectively measure and represent their products and results.

The Morse TEC manufacturing division controls the chain and chain systems.  Most notably the HY-VO and the Morse Gemini chain systems.  These are for front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive transmission chains.  Also included in this important division are the timing chain systems, crankshaft and camshaft sprockets, and turbochargers (bwauto.com).  These applications are used for passenger cars and many commercial vehicles.

BorgWarner has come out with a new four-wheel-drive product recently.  This product is the Interactive Torque Management system (bwauto.com).  Acura was the first car that the application was used in.  There is a possibility that this could start being used in many other makes and models of automobiles as it was in the Acura.  This product is more evidence of the innovative nature of BorgWarner, and it shows that there will be more and more advancements at this company in the future.

BorgWarner has many good qualities that can take them into a prosperous future of growth and stability.  The fact that they have a strong international presence and supply nearly every OEM in the world will help with sustaining strength in the market.  Also, the innovative and forward looking nature of the corporation will help to keep them on the cutting edge and in the front of the pack concerning product improvements.  These qualities appear to make BWA a very formidable presence in the industry now and for years to come.
